What is Art & Design?

When we think of Art and Design we may think of painting and drawing, and we understand this subject to be very creative. There is, however, far more to this subject than initially meets the eye.

Art and Design is a broad creative subject that focuses on hands-on learning. In this subject, you will develop a well-rounded understanding of the creative process through direct experience with a variety of visual media, like painting, drawing, sculpture, and graphic design. This is also a subject that enables you to develop your ideas and personal artistic style.

Fine Art or Design

When deciding on a creative career, the first thing to consider is whether you want to specialise in Fine Art or Design. Despite the fact that these two occupations are interwoven, the primary focus of art careers is on the creation of things with aesthetic appeal, meaning or a response to a topic or theme.

Design careers, on the other hand, are concerned with recognising creative needs or possibilities and then developing design solutions to address them. This form of creativity often has a more functional approach.

Transferrable skills

Whether you choose to pursue Fine Art or Design, each area will assist you in developing the transferable skills and knowledge necessary for a creative career.

You'll learn the basics of each medium and how to incorporate them into your own creative projects. You will learn research techniques and investigate a variety of topics such as 2D and 3D skills, colour theory, texture, composition, planning, critical thinking, context, and the development of a design concept or an artwork plan.

The study of art and design helps students acquire a variety of "soft skills" such as effective communication and teamwork, the ability to solve problems creatively, self-discipline, and contextual awareness. Your pursuit of a creative job may benefit from possessing skills such as these.
